The organization offers community action groups that promote change on a statewide basis concerning the diagnosis, care and treatment of mentally ill individuals with such conditions as schizophrenia, manic depression or other disabling affective brain disorder. There are no geographic restrictions.
National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), provides educational materials concerning mental illness and available services; advocates for the rights of patients and their families and friends; promotes relevant research and administers a network of chapters and support groups for families and friends of people who have a mental illness. The organization implements its goals by educating policy and decision-making bodies and individuals about the problems and needs of mentally ill individuals educating the public about mental illness, available services, and the effect of current legislation; and by taking an active role on planning committees and advisory boards that deal with services and policies that affect mentally ill individuals and their families.
An extensive network of affiliates provide support services for families of people who have mental illnesses, including referral to available community resources; classes for families, education about patient’s rights; guidance in family participation in treatment planning; and mutual support groups for family emotional survival.
The program also provides specialized information and referral for services related to mental health issues. Call affiliates for support group and local chapter information. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for services; donations are requested, but not required, at support groups.
